Chapter Six

Good god. When she suggested that they jump in the water, she'd just wanted to cool off and do what she could to hide the flush she knew was all over her cheeks.

And other places.

She just couldn't stand there next to him and not feel like he could see the physical evidence of her arousal.

Isla didn't know what to do anymore.

Just being in the same room with him made her off-balance. Heated. Her heart pounding in her chest.

Getting in the water was her way to get her mind off of his...

His chest.

His arms.

His... everything below those things.

With those distracting thoughts, she sank down beneath the surface of the water and blinked until she could see the world teeming with life.

There weren't many fish this close to the shore. Those that were big enough to really turn her head were further out. Or if she swam over to the fish pond, she could see some there.

Just off of the shore where she lived, she could see schools of tiny fish darting in and out of the rocks below the water.

A tiny crab peeked out from a hole in the rocks and darted back into the shadows.

Dropping her feet down into the soft crunch of sand, she stood up and used her hands to brush her hair and water from her face.

She blinked to chase the water from her eyes and eyelashes and when she opened her eyes, she saw him looking at her. "How does that feel?"

His eyes roamed over her body as he moved closer, churning water with every step. "It feels good."

He looked even better.

It was torture, as her own eyes were drawn toward the drops of water clinging to his skin.

He was tanned in a way that said he wasn't a stranger to sunlight.

She, on the other hand, had several degrees of a farmer's tan on her arms and by the heat she felt on her nose, she knew she was going to be hurting later.

But, she knew it was worth it.

There was something earthy and grounded about Magnus.

He was a powerful man with muscles to spare, and yet he didn't have an ego about it. He carried himself with a kind of grace that she didn't associate much with men.

He was almost toe to toe with her in the water and even though the bay didn't have much in the way of waves, there was still enough of a current coming into the shore that the water surged around their legs.

Pushing them toward each other.

Isla reached out to keep herself from falling into him and ended up with her hands on his arms and feeling the heat of his hands on her hips.

"Sorry." Her apology sounded ridiculously breathless in her own ears. "I didn't intend to knock you over."

He gave her a kind of incredulous look. "Knock me over?" His laughter made her smile. "I doubt that you could manage it."

She widened her eyes at his comment.

His smile deepened as he looked at her face and she knew he was reading the expression he saw there.
